Behind the myth and the mouth

Republican voters' esteem for Newt Gingrich has been rising fast. At this rate it might someday equal, though not surpass, his regard for himself. Gingrich is not a person with an ego. He's an ego with a person.

The White House decision to back a California-based maker of advanced solar panels with a $535 million loan guarantee in 2009 looks seedier by the day. By all appearances, this deal and subsequent debacle had more to do with campaign cash and hoodwinking voters than it did with green energy.

Up periscope. Swivel east. See your future.

Let's tell ourselves that every dollar the U.S. government borrows and spends goes to an urgent and absolutely necessary cause.
