Gray Thursday

The candy aisles were stocked with Christmas goodies the day after Halloween, the holiday lights were up before daylight saving time ended and we were knee-deep in mail-order catalogs by Veterans Day. But Black Friday on Thursday? For a lot of Americans, that's taking things too far.

Chapman: The balanced budget amendment delusion

When I graduated from college in 1976, I got a job in Washington with the National Taxpayers Union, which was working to get a constitutional amendment to require a balanced federal budget. Someone graduating today could sign up there and pursue the same goal. The balanced budget amendment has never gone away and never come to pass.

To grandmother's house we go

I adored my dad, but did not love my grandmother. I wanted to love Grandma Sophie. I wrote her letters when I was first learning to write, back when I was figuring out "dear" versus "deer" and where to put the stamp.

Being thankful amid personal grief

So many people take Thanksgiving Day for granted, as a holiday of gratitude for family, friends and blessings. That is why what is intended as a joyful celebration has been difficult for me the past two years. Then again, so have all holidays. Birthdays and anniversaries included. I know I'm not alone when I say such occasions only remind me of love lost and those no longer with us, but it certainly feels that way.

Thanksgiving in October

From the frozen fields of Canada, I wish you all a Happy Thanksgiving. My only question is: "Why now?"
