Cut libraries? <i>Shush!</i>

Mayor Rahm Emanuel's proposal to cut staff and hours of operation at public libraries in the new city budget comes at a time when this cherished institution is already facing "formidable challenges" coast to coast, according to a recent policy report from the Chicago-based American Library Association.

Denial — the Madoff family style

I didn't see any Ruth Madoff masks on Halloween night, but it wouldn't have surprised me if I had. The wife of disgraced Wall Street Ponzi schemer Bernard Madoff is Pariah No. 1 this week, followed closely by her son Andrew. The two, along with Andrew's fiancee, appeared on "60 Minutes" on Sunday night to promote their "authorized family biography," "Truth and Consequences."

Here we go again Here we go again

With the continuing NBA lockout — now in its fifth month —some cities and citizens are starting to fret about the impact of this work stoppage on their local economies. Not to worry. There may be some cash-flow problems for the short guys with limos and the tall guys with tattoos, and some emotional costs to die-hard fans who otherwise have no lives and sports reporters who find they now have even more time on their hands, but the economic impact on a city with an NBA franchise is approximately zero.
