The terrible cost of dropping out

American educators and parents spend years drumming a message into teenagers: Don't quit school. You won't find a job. You'll wind up in jail. You'll ruin your life.

There are many trends I have no trouble understanding even if I don't participate in them, from Facebook to sushi. But one has always baffled me: tattoos. They used to be rare and they're now common across all races and classes. Some 40 percent of adults aged 26 to 40 have one or more.
