'Higher Ground' project wouldn't let Farmiga get away

Vera Farmiga calls it "a threshold film." For three years, the actress who received an Oscar nomination for "Up in the Air" was attached, as they say, to a film version of "This Dark World," the Carolyn S. Briggs nonfiction book subtitled "a memoir of salvation found and lost."

There's funny and then there's funny, and "A Good Old-Fashioned Orgy" is neither. I suspect "Contagion" will be funnier.

'Higher Ground': Seeker takes us on her journey 'Higher Ground' — 3 1/2 stars
Seeker brings us along

In this fine, searching, new film, director/star Vera Farmiga plays Corinne, a member of a fervent Midwestern evangelical church.

'Utopia': Tepid temper tantrum inspires lukewarm film 'Seven Days in Utopia' — 2 stars
A tepid temper tantrum

A mild-mannered, young golfer has a mild meltdown in the middle of a tournament, followed by seven days of perspective-patching among God-fearing Texas folk.

'Five Days': Cheesy filmmaking battles effectiveness 'Five Days of War' — 2 stars
Cheesy film not effective

The public seems to be sick to death of war movies, especially when they're as much of a mixed bag as this hell-on-earth thriller.
