Newt's debt to President Clinton

So it's official. No one really cares that Newt Gingrich is an egotistical, vainglorious scoundrel, at least where women are concerned.

I suspect Saul Alinsky would nod with grudging admiration at the way GOP presidential hopeful Newt Gingrich repeatedly injects his name into speeches and interviews.

Gov. Pat Quinn announced plans last week to close two state mental health institutions and move their patients into community-based care. The governor is getting a ton of heat over this decision, from politicians, from parents of patients and from community leaders. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. said the state is "balancing its budget on the backs of our most vulnerable citizens."

However high his judicial career climbs, though, he'll forever have to live with the disgrace that influential Chicago Democrats have imposed on him: Whatever his smarts, temperament and integrity, Degnan will always be just their made man.
