Recently some readers complained about my characterization of Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum as a "weird, pious wackadoo," charging bias against religious conservatives. Obviously they didn't realize that when it comes to mockery, I'm an equal-opportunity columnist. As a historian, I probably shouldn't be watching "Downton Abbey," and not because it's inaccurate. PBS's hit series gives me sleepless nights because it hauntingly recalls World War I, a bloodletting no one wanted but nobody knew how to head off. I toss and turn, thinking we're similarly trapped by an escalating game of brinkmanship in the Middle East.
